Snow Removal In O'Fallon Illinois
WINTER 2000

Snow Removal   The safety of the traveling public has always been of primary concern to the City of O'Fallon Public Works Department.  During the winter months snow and ice can cause extremely hazardous conditions.

This page addresses common
   residential questions about snow removal.
What do crews do if there is not enough snow to plow, but frost/ice is present?
During those times when there is light snowfall (less than 1"), and the roads are icy, street crews will spread salt to prevent ice on bridges and in the traffic lanes.

  When does snow removal begin?
Snow removal begins when enough snow has accumulated (1"-3").

When will my street be plowed?
Depending of the severity of the snowstorm, residential streets are plowed within 24 hours after the storm ends.

Will my circle drive or cul-de-sac be plowed?
Circle drives or cul-de-sacs will be cleared when the equipment becomes available.  Dumpbed trucks with a 1-ton capacity will be used primarily, with other equipment supplementing the process when it becomes available.

  What about my alley?
All residential alleys are cleared last.

What about our driveways and sidewalks?
Unfortunately, the City does not have the personnel to clean sidewalks and driveways.  These will remain the responsibility of the resident.

What if my mailbox becomes covered with snow?
Sometimes when the accumulation of snow is substantial, crews have no place to put the snow thus curbside mailboxes may become blocked.  Again, the City does not have the personnel to remove snow from mailbox areas. Teamwork between the City and its residents is essential to the success of the snow removal effort.  We ask that you clear the snow from your mailbox to allow the Post Office to deliver your mail.

What about snow removal in the downtown business district?
Due to the amount of traffic it is not practical to try to clear the streets of snow during normal business hours.  Areas such as the downtown business district and City owned property would be cleared before the start of normal business hours during the workweek.  Special attention shall be given to all emergency-handling agencies.

Should we remove cars from the residential streets during snow removal?
Yes.  City Ordinance 72.14 On-Street Parking (B) Snow Removal states:  It shall be unlawful to park any vehicle on any public street or portion thereof in the city at any time when snow is being removed from such street.  Please remember that vehicles may also be towed at the owner's expense.  A good rule of thumb would be to move your car from the street and park it in your driveway when snow is anticipated.

How can we as residents be more helpful to the city plow crews?
To help the plow crews clean the streets quickly and without your vehicle being boxed in by cleared snow, please park your vehicle in your driveway or garage.  Be patient and courteous, especially during a Snow Emergency.

What does a "Snow Emergency" mean?
When falling snow, sleet, or freezing rain will create extreme conditions, the Mayor can announce the prohibition of parking motor vehicles on snow emergency routes at specified times.  Signs will be posted that denote "Snow Routes" before prohibition takes place.

What is a Snow Emergency Route?
A Snow Emergency Route is any route designated by City Ordinance.  On such a street or highway designated as a snow emergency route, special signs will be posted.

When does the Snow Emergency take effect?
This provision will take effect when the snow has reached a depth of 2" and the Director of Public Safety determines that a "Snow Emergency" is necessary.

How many lane miles does the City have to plow?
The City of O'Fallon has to plow approximately 250 miles of street lanes.

If I have an emergency, what should I do?
Call the Police Department at 911.

What if I have questions about Snow Removal?
If you have questions about snow removal, you may call the Department of Public Works at City Hall by dialing 624-4500.

O'Fallon Department of Public Works Pamphlet in January 2000.
