O'Fallon Public Library's Learning Activities Resource Center (LARC) is a place where child-oriented materials, activities, and other resources abound.  If you work with kids, LARC is for you!

Several years ago, the children's librarian at O'Fallon Public Library began thinking about how the library might do more to help people who work with children. 

Soon she was building what is now called the Learning Activities Resource Center (LARC).  It's a collection of books, magazines, photocopyable teaching materials, posters, and other items for use by parents, teachers, education students, home schoolers, scout leaders, and child care providers.  The library has collected materials for a range of ages, from pre-school through junior high.

LARC includes many books and magazines dealing with teaching techniques and learning styles.  If you're working with a child who needs help with math, reading, or any other subject, you'll find that LARC has helpful, easy-to-use resources.

The best way to learn what's available is by visiting the library.  Schedule an hour or so to look through the collection.  Staff members are always happy to take your questions.  Remember, too, that O'Fallon Public Library is always expanding LARC's offering.

What's Available in the LARC?

LARC houses hundreds of books, such as:

• Jim Trelease's popular books on reading
• A series describing what children should know at different grade levels
• Books on math, science, black history, curriculum planning, crafts, party activities, holiday programs
• And many other important topics

MAGAZINES

Magazines often contain the most up-to-date information.  LARC subscribes to:

• First Teacher
• Good Apple Newspaper
• Growing without Schooling
• Metro East Family Gazette
• School Library Journal
• Teaching K-8
• Wonder Science
• And many other outstanding magazines

POSTERS

Check out posters to display at home or school.

PHOTOCOPYABLE MATERIALS

Worksheets give children the practice they need in various subjects.  LARC includes books of worksheets and other activities whose copyright allows photocopying for use at home or in schools.

CURRICULUM FILE

Get kids involved by using the library's teaching kits, videos, and other curriculum materials.

SEASONAL ACTIVITY FILE

Here are arts and crafts activities, songs, and poetry to match the season.  There's a file for each month of the year.

ASSIGNMENT ALERTS

An "Assignment Alert" from a teacher lets our staff know that students will be doing research for a specific assignment.  We then check whether we have the needed materials.

We can even keep certain items on reserve, to help ensure all students find the resources they need.
