SCOTT AFB, IL (April 3, 1998) -- A groundbreaking ceremony to mark the beginning of construction for the Air National Guard's 126th Air Refueling Wing is scheduled for April 4th, 1998.
"We are looking forward to moving into our new facilities at Scott," said Major General Richard G. Austin, adjutant general for the Illinois Air National Guard. "The 126th brings with it a distinguished history of continued service to the country and an economic boon to the local economy."

The 126th ARW's history dates back to 1927. Its predecessor, the 108th Observation Squadron, was the first Air National Guard unit to be formed in Illinois. Approximately 4,800 experienced National Guard aviation personnel were mobilized in preparation for World War II.

The 126th also served as a bombardment wing deploying to Europe to strengthen U.S. forces during the Cold War until 1961 when it became the first air refueling wing in the Air National Guard. The wing was also mobilized for the Persian Gulf War.
The primary mission of the 126th ARW is to support four conventional operations plans in three theaters. Tasking includes host and lead unit responsibilities. The unit is also tasked to support the nuclear strike missions of the Single Integrated Operational Plan (SIOP).
As part of the Air Mobility Command, the wing provides air refueling and airlift support to major commands of the Air Force, other U.S. military forces, and the military forces of allied nations.
During peacetime the 126th ARW receives direction through the Adjutant General, the Governor of Illinois, and the National Guard Bureau. Upon federal mobilization, the wing is assigned to AMC's 15th Air Force.
As part of its recommendations for base closure, the Base Realignment and Closure Commission recommended that the 126th ARW relocate its aerial refueling mission and KC-135E Stratotankers from O'Hare Airport in Chicago to Scott AFB in Southern Illinois.
"The move will result in more than $80 million in new construction projects and approximately 300 new full time and 900 part time jobs," said Austin. "The move is expected to be completed in June 1999."
Approximately 200 community leaders, elected officials and military representatives are expected to attend the ceremony.
