Pan Am Pays $17,000 On Airport Bill
Disputes Some Debt For Security Machine
UPDATE - Airlines Pay MidAmerica Debt
BELLEVILLE, IL (July 24, 2001) -- Pan American Airways cut MidAmerica St. Louis Airport a $17,000 check Monday but is disputing some of its bills for security X-ray machines at the airport, according to airport director Rich Hargrove.
|
Last week, Hargrove said the airline owed the airport $115,000, and $81,000 of that was at least 120 days past due. The reason Pan Am has let its payments lapse so long, Hargrove said, is the company questioned invoices showing how much the airline owed.
During the first eight months of Pan Am operations at the airport, the county agreed to cover the expense of passenger security X-ray machines there on condition of reimbursement, Hargrove said. Passengers walk through the machines and have their luggage inspected.
The $81,000 is for eight payments for the X-ray machines and the $17,000 check covers three of them, Hargrove said. He said the airline also has agreed to pay the full amount shown on two more invoices. However, the airline is still questioning three other invoices.
"Monies are flowing, and we're very pleased with how things are," Hargrovee said. | | Airlines Pay MidAmerica Debt
October 10, 2001 Update
Both Pan American Airlines and Trans World Airlines have paid their debts to MidAmerica St. Louis Airport, according to airport Director Rick Hargrove.
Pan Am paid $56,000 to the airport, which Hargrove said is all the company owed for security screening services there. Earlier, Hargrove said the airline had an $81,000 debt that was at least 120 days past due. But Hargrove said the difference between the dollar amounts is the airport's responsibility.
In August, a TWA Boeing 717 made an emergency landing at the Mascoutah airport. The flight originated in Nashville, Tenn., and was headed to St. Louis but made an unscheduled landing in Springfield because of bad weather and the need to refuel. No one was injured in the emergency landing.
Hargrove said the airline's expenses for the emergency landing were just over $8,000. |
He also said he is happy that the airline sent the payment and he's planning to sit down and discuss further payment arrangements.
Because the airline has expanded service into San Juan, Puerto Rico, an official he needs to speak with has been difficult to contact, Hargrove said. "That's what the delay has been," he said. "They're making every effort to make that person available."
The rest of the $115,000 Pan Am owes is its May and June monthly payments for landing fees and airport services, such as cabin cleaning. Hargrove said in a typical month, the airline gets about a $15,000 bill.
