MidAmerica Airport Seeks Cargo Airline
Incentives Offered
MidAmerica Airport, Illinois (October 19, 2001) -- St. Clair County officials are working to attract a cargo company to MidAmerica St. Louis Airport.
The county's Public Building Commission Thursday awarded a $4,500 contract to O'Fallon-based TAMS to design a brochure to market the airport specifically to cargo operators. That figure does not include printing costs.
Currently, the airport has a general brochure it uses for marketing, and has inserts specific to components of the aviation industry, like cargo and passenger airlines.
Also, airport representatives will attend an air cargo trade show later this month in Miami.
"Right now, freight looks like it's really offering us a great opportunity," said St. Clair County Administrator Dan Maher said. "That's where we plan to concentrate."
But Maher also said county officials and airport marketers are not ignoring other components of the aviation industry, including passenger airlines.
"We continue to market all aspects of the airport," he said.
Thanks to the federal government, there is an incentive for cargo operators to locate at MidAmerica.
Last year, Congress agreed to pay 90 percent of the cost of constructing a cargo facility at MidAmerica, hut a tenant for it must be secured first.
Developer Lestet Petty said the airport ia about to get Its first cargo tenant. Petty, a developer and consultant to Phoenix Provider, said the aspiring cargo airline has the financing it needs to begin operating at MidAmerica, and hopes to begin construction on its hangar there next spring.
But Maher said there is information Ptetty must provide to the county so it can proceed with issuing the bonds.
