St. Louis MidAmerica Airport Seeks Hike In Budget
Largest Increase: Fuel Purchases
Airport Trims 2002 Operating Costs
Belleville, Illinois (December 13, 2002) -- St. Louis MidAmerica Airport was able to trim $200,000 out of its operating costs this year, but it has requested a 3.6 percent increase in the 2002 budget to buy more fuel because of increased fuel sales.
"We set out to reduce the (operating costs) of the airport this year, and they did a good job," County Administrator Dan Maher said. "We are very pleased."
The St. Clair County Public Building Commission on Thursday approved the increase, raising the Mascoutah airport's budget from $3.16 million in 2002 to $3.27 million in 2003.
It must now pass through the county's Finance Committee on Dec. 23 and gain approval from the County Board on December 30. The Public Building Commission said it couldn't release the money until then.
The largest increases in the budget will be about $300,000 for fuel purchases, Maher said. In August, the commission authorized airport director Tim Cantwell to spend $350,000 more than originally budgeted this year for fuel because of increased military aircraft traffic.
The airport was selling about $24,500 a month in fuel sales during the first six months of the year. Military aircraft traffic began picking up, and the airport sold $210,000 in fuel in July and the first two weeks of August.
