President Clinton Will Fly To MidAmerica Airport
BELLEVILLE, IL (July 3, 1999) -- MidAmerica Airport will get a big visitor on Tuesday when President Clinton uses it to park Air Force One while he visits East St. Louis, Illinois.
Clinton will arrive at MidAmerica Airport at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday and travel to East St. Louis to speak at the Walgreens Drug Store parking lot, according to the White House press office. The speech is at 5:15 p.m. and is open to the public.
Clinton is visiting East St. Louis as part of his four-day trip to economically distressed cities. He is pushing his New Markets Initiative with an entourage of business executives, congressmen and cabinet members who will discuss potential for business investment in the communities.
The new Walgreens store was built by St. Louis developer Jim Koman. The city kicked in $425,000 for the land purchases and is expected to invest $1.8 million for a second phase. The Walgreens is the anchor for a retail development expected to hit $9 million and include a supermarket, two fashion stores, a video store and an insurance office.
Clinton will travel to East St. Louis via motorcade, which will likely mean Interstate 64 will be shut down as he passes. After the speech he returns to MidAmerica Airport to leave at 6:55 p.m.
