MIDAMERICA AIRPORT, (July 15, 1999) -- More than 200 military and civilian base members met President Bill Clinton at MidAmerica Airport last Tuesday, July 6, 1999.

The city was designated as an empowerment zone and will get $3 million to implement a strategic plan for economic growth. Clinton's visit to the metroeast lasted a little over three hours. He landed at MidAmerica Airport at 4:15 p.m., quickly greeted local and state dignitaries and left by motorcade on Interstate 64 to East St. Louis.

Several buses transported Scott AFB personnel from U.S. Transportation Command, Air Mobility Command, 375th Airlift Wing and throughout the base to watch President Clinton's departure.
Before he left to continue his seven-state tour, Clinton shook hands and exchanged comments with numerous Scott members. Clinton was escorted by Gen. Tony Robertson, USTRANSCOM and AMC commander.

"I was very impressed the president took the extra time to greet each of us," said Army Sgt. Mark Kohl, 27, of Quincy, IL., an information management specialist at USTRANSCOM and a 9-year Army veteran. "It isn't everyday that the President of the United States is in your neighborhood," he added. Marine Sgt. Jason Weber, 25, from Sioux Falls, S.D., a computer network infrastructure NCO at USTRANSCOM, also met the president. "Meeting the President, Honorable Mr. Clinton, was a highlight of my military career," he said. "I appreciate that the President took the time to acknowledge the servicemen and women of Scott."

Traffic and overpasses were temporarily blocked by state and local police to local drivers as the motorcade of security and national press cars made its way to and from East St. Louis.
On-lookers wishing to catch a glimpse of the president gathered at the entrance to MidAmerica Airport and were quickly directed to a fenced area near the airport's administration building.
"I really wanted to see President Clinton," said Mascoutah resident Elizabeth Bogue. She was able to enter the airport lobby and wait but, was escorted out the building before Air Force One landed.
"I'm very disappointed, I came down to the terminal early but the security agents made me stand outside the front of the building when the plane landed, but I did see the motorcade go by," she added.
