Location
"GATEWAY TO THE WEST." St. Louis, the largest city in Missouri, is located on the bank of the Mississippi River, just below its confluence with the Missouri River. Downtown St. Louis is less than 20 miles from Scott AFB. The metropolitan area encompasses 12 counties -- seven in Missouri and five in Illinois. The population, including St. Louis city and county, is approximately 2.5 million people.
Because of its historic role in the nation's westward expansion, St. Louis is known as the "Gateway to the West." Commemorating this role is the 630-foot stainless steel Gateway Arch, the nation's tallest man-made monument.
Homeowners and others welcome the fact that the housing market is ranked as one of the most affordable in the nation and the cost of living is lower than nearly all large metropolitan areas.

Cultural and informational opportunities abound with internationally-recognized institutions and organizations. Residents and visitors, young and old, share the excitement and experience of the symphony, the opera, the zoo, the science center, concerts, the theater, the art museum and more.
Five-star restaurants and corner bistros offer an array of choices for fine dining and casual dinners. St. Louis has a great many fairs and festivals throughout the region that offer family fun and entertainment. The variety of themes represents the area's cultural heritage and traditions. Some example include Fair St. Louis, St. Louis Strassenfest, Blues Festival, Taste St. Louis, Greek Festival and the Great Forest Park Balloon Festival.
Downtown St. Louis is well underway with an economic resurgence involving the new domed football stadium, the America's Center Convention Complex and the expansion of the Kiel Center. The arrival of gaming on the St. Louis riverfront complements the numerous other downtown attractions, including the Busch Memorial Stadium, Laclede's Landing and the Arch-ground activities. New and renovated hotels vie for increased convention and tourism business.
Union Station, a redeveloped train station, and the St. Louis Centre also offer the convenience of shopping malls while the historical Soulard Market offers the "hustle and bustle" of outdoor vendors.
Lambert-St. Louis International Airport is the third-fastest growing airport in the world. The Metrolink transportation system conveniently connects the Lambert-St. Louis International Airport with downtown; plans include extending the rail system to Scott AFB.
St. Louis ranks fifth with five headquarters of the nation's top 100 industrial corporations. The city is also highly rated for medical institutions and universities.
